Mali’s Armed Forces (FAMa) announced on Sunday that they had repelled a dawn attack on their military base in San, in the Ségou region. A few hours later, channels affiliated with the Support Group for Islam and Muslims (JNIM) claimed, on the contrary, to have taken full control of the barracks. Two antagonistic versions of the same clash, encapsulating in a single day the information war being waged between Mali’s army and its assailants in the country’s center.
Army’s account – « riposte vigorous, » Situation under control
According to a « Flash Info » released by the general staff, the attack was launched on Sunday at 5:30 a.m. against the FAMa base in San.
The army claims to have mounted a « vigorous riposte, » specifying that « the attempt was repelled » and that « the situation is under control. »
Africa Corps, the Russian contingent deployed alongside the transitional authorities, bolstered this version: in a separate publication and video, the group claims that JNIM and FLA fighters attempted to storm the base held by the 23rd FAMa regiment, commanded by Lieutenant-Colonel El Oumrani. More than forty assailants were reportedly killed, according to the same source.
Africa Corps Videos – Commander declares « enemy eliminated »
In footage relayed by Africa Corps, Lieutenant-Colonel El Oumrani swears that « the enemy has been eliminated » and that « the base has not fallen, » with mopping-up operations still underway in the area.
Africa Corps adds that the jihadists circulated several videos filmed around the military compound to proclaim victory on social networks, before withdrawing from the vicinity of the base.
JNIM’s counter-Narrative – « Total Control » of the Barracks
The reading is reversed on the JNIM side. On Sunday morning, a propaganda channel affiliated with the group claimed to have taken « total control of the Malian army barracks in the city of San. »
As in other recent episodes, the reliability of these publications is difficult to establish: the images do not, at this stage, allow verification of either an effective takeover or a complete withdrawal.
A worrying Surge in Jihadist offensives – Strategy under strain
The episode is part of a worrying resurgence of jihadist offensives against Malian military positions. Several garrisons have been targeted in recent months in different regions of the country, testing the security strategy of Bamako and its Russian partners, already criticized for its human cost.
In San, the tactical truth remains, for now, suspended between the army’s victorious communiqués and JNIM’s triumphalist narrative.
